What is Black Hat SEO?

“Black hat” SEO are methods to try to improve rankings that are disapproved of by the search engines and/or involve deception. This can range from text that is “hidden”, either as text colored similar to the background or in an invisible or left of visible div, or by redirecting users from a page that is built for search engines to one that is more human friendly. As a general rule, a method that sends a user to a page that was different to the page the search engined ranked is Black hat. One well known example is Cloaking, the practice of serving one version of a page to search engine spiders/bots and another version to human visitors.
Search engines can and do penalize sites they discover using black hat methods, either by reducing their rankings or eliminating their listings from their databases altogether. Such penalties can be applied either automatically by the search engines’ algorithms, or by a manual review of a site.
One infamous example was the February 2006 Google removal of both BMW Germany and Ricoh Germany for use of deceptive practices.[24]. However, both companies quickly apologized, fixed the offending pages, and were restored to Google’s list

Google Results Go Down Then Up

It is pretty clear that when you are at a steady postion you will move down a few spots before you move up. For example if you are in the 30th position you will most likely move to the 35th, 40th, or worse before you jump to the 20 something position. I have found this to be the case on Google with numerous blogs of mine.
YAHOO and Jumpcut.com

Yahoo recently picked up the services of jumpcut.com, which is very similar to Google’s Youtube.com. Many believe that Yahoo made this move to attempt to stay up to speed with Google, I personnally agree with this 100%. Now the question is how good is jumpcut? I gave it a try and have to give it 4 out of 5 stars. If you have not had the chance give it a try, it is easy to sign up and very user friendly to upload files.

Does Google Own Youtube?

I find it very interesting that the quickly growing youtube.com has been purchased by Google, Inc. for the sum of 1.65 billion dollars. The creators of the youtube website work with similar goals and ambitions as the team at Google. The two companies quickly merged as of as of late hoping to strengthen their quality of service for their users.
Many articles have stated that Google will allow the current staff at youtube to continue running the show. Many speculate that will change over time, but its is a business deal what do you expect? I just find it interesting that a video based version of myspace.com is worth 1.65 billion dollars to Google. If that was millions i would understand completely.
The Blogger Beta Update & Google Toolbar

Seriously i’ve noticed the past few weeks now that many of Google’s so called updates have been just a pain to blogger users. They have almost completely destroyed the old blogger format, which makes it a so difficult to use now…and they won’t let you transfer over to Blogger Beta just yet.
Also i want to add that the new Google Toolbar has quite a few flaws. I did not want to update from the old version, but was automatically done when i reopenned my browser. Seriously Google folks, i love you but step it up!
Google Update

I noticed this past week that many of my pages dropped significantly in the Google Search results. With nothing changed on my end that only leaves Google to be the cause. I’m sure they were just updating their index files or adjusting that algo, but either way things are back to normal as of this morning.
The question of how they cache pages is always debated by myself and other SEOs but we all have our own opinons. I personally watch my pages quite closely, and this particular change is not a result in a different cache. I believe that Google is updating or adjusting their algorithm.
Google Adsense

Is google adsense really worth the time? As you look at every site on the web it seems that nearly everyone is using google ads. Some sites are flooded with ads. In most cases it has become a bit of a joke, in the sense that few good leads are coming from those clicks. I do however feel that they are relevant to Google itself. Why? because its Google’s product, and most importantly its Google’s money. They say they don’t give more relevance to sites that have google ads, but it has to. Why because it is going to help Google’s spider finder your site easier. If i’m incorrect, please by all means prove me wrong!
What is Hotlinking?

I did a little research on hotlinking yesterday and discovered that many people are getting very frustrated by this, understandably so. The resolution is simply to try and block out or contact the person hotlinking from you. As I looked at it people are just doing things incorrectly. There are a bunch of image hosting sites out there that are designed specifically for you to hotlink from them. My personal favorite is image shack. So if someone hotlinks to you either pull a ’switcheroo’, meaning changed the photo they are linking to, or contact them and suggest they use a host site.
I’m not optimizing for SEO material

A friend of mine mentioned that i’m simply optimizing for “SEO” material to climb up in the search results. Thats not true. I’m not optimizing for anything but my name. “John Weaver” is the only Google search result terms that I am concerned about. So I wanted to state that I will be posting anything that seems interesting or important to me. Please leave ANY comments if you want, i would love to hear your feedback!
