Does Google Own Youtube?

I find it very interesting that the quickly growing youtube.com has been purchased by Google, Inc. for the sum of 1.65 billion dollars. The creators of the youtube website work with similar goals and ambitions as the team at Google. The two companies quickly merged as of as of late hoping to strengthen their quality of service for their users.
Many articles have stated that Google will allow the current staff at youtube to continue running the show. Many speculate that will change over time, but its is a business deal what do you expect? I just find it interesting that a video based version of myspace.com is worth 1.65 billion dollars to Google. If that was millions i would understand completely.
